Ex-prison guard pleads guilty in drug smuggling case

May 2, 2019

BOSTON (AP) — A former Massachusetts prison guard has pleaded guilty to trying to smuggle drugs he intended to sell to inmates into the facility where he worked.

Prosecutors say 29-year-old Steven Frazer, of Cumberland, Rhode Island, pleaded guilty Wednesday to conspiracy to possess a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Authorities say Frazer, who worked as a corrections officer at MCI-Norfolk, met with a cooperating witness in November and was given 40 Suboxone strips, 24 packs of synthetic marijuana and $2,500 in cash. The meeting was video and audio recorded.

Suboxone is used to treat heroin addiction, but can be misused to get high.

Frazer faces up to 10 years in prison at sentencing on Sept. 19.
