Community holds memorial for stabbing victim at speedway
DACONO, Colo. (AP) — Racers, friends and family members paid tribute to one of their own at the Colorado National Speedway in Dacono.
The Daily Camera reports the group gathered Sunday afternoon for a memorial service for 20-year-old Makayla Grote who died earlier this month from stab wounds allegedly suffered at the hands of a 15-year-old suspect.
Boulder County prosecutors say the suspect traveled to Longmont looking for Grote’s younger sister, who topped a “death list” the boy is accused of compiling. He has been charged with first-degree murder.
Grote started driving go-karts at age 8 and went on to race a late-model stock car numbered 97 at the speedway.
Her father, Troy Grote, gave the door of her car to the track, where it will be displayed with other memorabilia.
