Emergency crews search for teen in river
BARBOURSVILLE — Emergency officials were searching for a 16-year-old boy Wednesday evening in the Guyandotte River in Barboursville.
According to Andrew Frasier, chief of the Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department, a “water incident” had taken place in the river near Martha Elementary School and the Esquire Golf Course. Crews were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said one young adult and three juveniles had reportedly been in the river, and as of 9 p.m. crews were searching for a 16-year-old boy who was still in the river.
The search was called off at 10 p.m. for the safety of the rescue team. Crews plan to meet at 8 a.m. Thursday, May 23, to continue searching.
Crews from Cabell County EMS, the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department, Barboursville VFD and West Virginia State Police were at the scene.
