MAMARONECK, N.Y. (AP) — A Westchester mother accused of stabbing police officers trying to help her ailing toddler who later died is now accused of murder.

A grand jury on Wednesday indicted Cynthia Arce (ahr-SAY') on murder charges in the death of 2-year-old Gabriella Maria Boyd in May.

Arce was hospitalized after she was shot by police trying to assist the toddler at their home in Mamaroneck. The officers were there to enforce a court order to turn the child over to her father.

The medical examiner ruled the child's death a homicide, but the specific cause is still unclear. Arce was later charged with attempted murder of a police officer.

Her lawyer told The Journal News he was pursuing a psychiatric defense and that Arce suffered from postpartum psychosis.

Her arraignment is pending.
