FITCHBURG -- Providing toys to children for Christmas this year was the goal of the students involved in the Interact Club Toy Drive at Fitchburg High School.
The Interact Club, led by co-presidents Tai Le and Gabriel Goncalves, took in toys -- big and small -- as donations since Dec. 12 in the cafeteria during lunch and in the nurse’s office throughout the school day.
The Interact Club then donated all the toys to Toys for Tots with some of the donations given to local families in need.
“The Interact Club was created to serve the community,” Le said. “So we thought it would be fitting to have a toy drive where we are able to spread holiday cheer throughout our community.”
Added Goncalves: “We realized that we need to help those in need, especially because it’s the holidays and (Advisor) Mr. (Peter) Perry believes, ‘It’s just the Christmas spirit.’”
The thought of making a child smile on Christmas is what motivated these students to do good for their community.
“Every kid deserves a bright Christmas and we hope this toy drive was able to make that happen,” Le said.
There’s a powerful feeling at the school when the students see others donating to children in need.
“The Interact Club feels a sense of joy and pride when we see all of the toys that are being donated,” Goncalves said. “We wanted to extend a helping hand to the families in our community that need a little bit of extra kindness and generosity during the holidays. It feels good to know that we can be making a difference in a child’s life and contributing to their holiday spirit.”
“Helping someone, no matter how big or small the gesture, is one of the greatest feelings,” said Le.
Fitchburg High Principal Jeremy Roche gushed with pride because of what the Interact Club is doing for children who are less fortunate.
“The Interact Club is a great example of how our kids take opportunities to improve their community in large and small ways,” Roche said. “To me they are the best of what kids have to offer at FHS. We are very proud of them.”
