UNDATED (AP) — Rain was the early winner on opening day, with games at Comerica Park and Great American Ball Park postponed. The Pittsburgh-Detroit game was washed out, as was the Washington-Cincinnati opener. All 30 teams in the majors had been scheduled to play today.
UNDATED (AP) —Yoenis Cespedes drove in three runs and newcomer Adrian Gonzalez hit a go-ahead double to lead Noah Syndergaard and the New York Mets past the St. Louis Cardinals 9-4 in their opener today. Syndergaard struck out 10 and walked none in six innings . Elsewhere in the majors, the Chicago Cubs beat the Miami Marlins 8 - 4. The Cubs’ Ian Happ hit a home run on the very first pitch of the year in that game.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — George Springer has set a MLB first with his 100th career home run for the Houston Astros. The World Series MVP led off the Astros’ season opener at Texas with a home run off Rangers left-hander Cole Hamels. It is the second year in a row that Springer led off the opener with a homer. Elias says that makes him the first player in MLB history to ever do that in consecutive seasons. Springer hit 34 homers during the 2017 regular season.
UNDATED (AP) — The Associated Press college basketball awards were announced today. Villanova guard Jalen Brunson is men’s college basketball player of the year and Virginia’s Tony Bennett is The men’s coach of the year. On the women’s side, A’ja Wilson of South Carolina is the basketball player of the year and Notre Dame’s Muffet McGraw won the women’s Coach of the Year for the fourth time.
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have signed free agent center Wesley Johnson. Johnson started 15 games last season with the New York Jets. Lions center Travis Swanson had concussion problems last year and is now a free agent. Guard Graham Glasgow can also play center and was the starter there at the end of last season.
