Italy announces bid for 2023 Rugby World Cup
MILAN (AP) — Italy will bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
The Italian Rugby Federation will formalize its interest in May, but announced on Thursday it has already been guaranteed support by the country’s governing sports body, the Italian Olympic Committee.
Italy has never hosted the Rugby World Cup but will stage the junior world championship this year, as it did in 2011.
“Italian rugby has everything necessary to organize an unforgettable Rugby World Cup and that, over the next two years, the whole movement will work to make this dream come true,” FIR president Alfredo Gavazzi said in a statement.
Italy will face competition, so far, from a joint bid by Ireland and Northern Ireland, who have also never hosted, and South Africa, the 1995 host.
The 2023 host will be announced in 2017.
