March 16, 1995

MESA, Ariz. (AP) _ Luis DeLeon continued his mastery over the ersatz Cactus League on Thursday, pitching the Chicago Cubs to a 7-2 victory over the San Diego Padres in front of 2,801 at HoHoKam Park.

DeLeon (3-0) shut out the Padres on four hits to earn his third victory in four starts. DeLeon has allowed 1 run on 10 hits over 18 innings.

While DeLeon was in control, the Padres pitchers couldn’t find the plate. The San Diego pitching staff allowed nine walks and the Cubs cashed in four of those for runs. Padres Diego starter Luis Galindez walked the first three batters he faced and they all scored.

Reliever Tom Kindler walked five more batters and the Cubs turned one of those into another run in the second inning. The Cubs worked another walk and a San Diego error for three more runs in the sixth inning.

The Padres avoided being shut out when they scored two runs in the ninth inning on doubles by John Cotton and Marvin Cole.
