Continentalvictory Sets World Record In Hambletonian Heats
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ Continentalvictory, looking to become the first filly to win the Hambletonian in 13 years, tied the world record for 3-year-olds today in qualifying for trotting’s most prestigious race.
Continentalvictory’s time of 1:52 1-5 broke the record of 1:52 4-5 for 3-year-old fillies, held by Peace Corps and CR Kay Suzie. It tied Mack Lobell’s record for the fastest mile by any 3-year-old.
Lindy Lane, who defeated Continentalvictory in the Beacon Course Trot last weekend, won the other elimination heat in 1:53 2-5 with Bill O’Donnell in the bike.
Lindy Lane was the 2-year-old colt trotting champoion, while Continentalvictory was the 2-year-old filly trotting champion, both in 1995.
Driven by Mike Lachance, Continentalvictory took the lead at the start and finished four lengths ahead of Act Of Grace, another filly. Also advancing to the final in the six-horse first heat were Tony Oaks, Freezing Cold and Pine Man. Pietro Pan broke stride at the start and was eliminated, finishing last.
All five horses in the second heat were guaranteed a spot in the final after Mr Vic, considered one the four pre-race favorites, was scratched about an hour before the elimination because of a foot injury.
Lindy Lane’s margin of victory was 1 3/4 lengths. Running Sea, Kramer Boy, Armbro Officer and Steeler Spur also advanced to the final, scheduled to be run at 3:45 p.m. EDT.
