Lauderdale County school getting solar panels through grant

March 24, 2019

MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) — A school district in eastern Mississippi will try using solar panels to become more energy efficient.

The Meridian Star reports the Lauderdale County school board approved a renewable energy grant for solar panels to be installed on one campus.

A Gulf Coast Community Foundation Grant will pay up to $200,000 for the project, which will cover the panels and a feasibility study.

Elliot Brewer, principal of West Lauderdale Elementary School, says he likes that the school might become self-sufficient with solar energy.

Superintendent John-Mark Cain says solar panels could be added to other campuses later, if it appears the district would benefit.
