No. 19 Arkansas 83, Jackson St 72

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) _ Derek Hood scored four straight points and grabbed a couple of big rebounds in the final three minutes as No. 19 Arkansas opened the season with a 83-72 victory against Jackson State on Sunday.

Jackson State (0-2) closed to 71-67 with 2:43 to play and had a chance to make it closer. But Vincent Jones missed a free throw and Hood rebounded.

At the other end, Hood backed in and turned to his right for a basket. Hood then rebounded another Tiger miss and made two free throws. A steal by Chris Walker led to a layup by Sergerio Gipson to make it a 10-point game.

Hood finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Pat Bradley led the Razorbacks with 20 points.

Jackson State lost its opener to Missouri by 41 on Friday night, and Arkansas’ lead reached 19 on Bradley’s 3 with 12 1/2 minutes to play. But Jo Jo McKenny worked hard for a rebound basket and then made a 3 to complete a 7-point run that narrowed the lead to 57-45.

Freshmen Jason Gilbert, Gipson and Brandon Dean made 3s for 13-point leads, but Jackson State answered each time. Fidel Woods made a jump hook and Jones, who led the Tigers with 15 points, blocked a shot by 7-foot Jason Jennings. Timmy Marks scored along the baseline and Eric Large nailed a 3 that cut it to 70-64 with 4:02 remaining.

Hood missed the front end of a one-and-one, McKenny tipped in a miss and Hood’s second straight foul put Jones on the free throw line. He made one and then missed.

The Tigers’ last lead was 9-8 on Marks’ 18-foot jumper. Hood started a 9-0 run with a free throw.

Both teams shot poorly in the first half _ Arkansas 13-of-34 and Jackson State 13-of-38. The Razorbacks led 38-29 because of a 9-1 edge in free throws.
