Sheriff: Student says he brought gun to school out of fear
LAKEWOOD, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina sheriff’s office says a student caught with a handgun at his high school says he brought it because he was afraid of getting bullied.
The State reported Wednesday that the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says a 15-year-old boy has been arrested for bringing a gun to Lakewood High School. Authorities haven’t released his identity.
A sheriff’s office statement says the gun was unloaded, though a fully loaded magazine was found in the student’s bag. No one was injured. It says the student told his friend he brought it because he was afraid of bullies.
It says the student threatened to “shoot up Hillcrest Middle School” and kill the sheriff and the then-superintendent in 2014. It’s unclear if the student was charged in that case.
