NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices started higher on Wall Street on Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was above 10,000, on a gain of 26 points. Gainers outnumbered losers by about three-to-two on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Nasdaq Composite Index was up nine points and the Standard-and-Poor’s 500 Stock Index added two points.

The Dow started Thursday’s session just 11 points below the 10,000. The blue-chip index has scored triple-digit gains in three out of the past four sessions.

The broader market also has moved up during that time.

Thursday’s early strength stems from some positive news on the economy and corporate earnings.

The government reported Thursday that new claims for jobless benefits fell last week, suggesting a somewhat stronger job market.

Shares of Hewlett-Packard were higher in after-hours trading after the company topped analysts’ estimates for its first-quarter earnings.
