PUPPY LAUNDERING

DES MOINES, Iowa _ The Iowa Attorney General’s Office is suing to shut down what it describes as a national puppy-laundering ring that sells dogs from illegal breeding operations at inflated prices while pretending the animals are rescues. The lawsuit filed Monday seeks an injunction to dissolve breeder J.A.K.’s Puppies, and nonprofits Hobo K9 Rescue and Rescue Pets Iowa Corp. The operations sold almost 1,300 animals in California, Illinois, Florida and New Jersey for more than $700,000 from 2016 to 2018, the lawsuit said. SENT: 358 words.

_ MOBSTER KILLED _ The man charged with killing the reputed boss of the Gambino crime family had a symbol on his hand that some say is associated with a conspiracy theory.

_ CRASH-SLEEPING MAN _ Authorities say a sleeping man was knocked from his bed after a vehicle struck in a crash was pushed into his northern New Jersey home.

_ NEWARK-THREE HOMES BURN _ Authorities say a fast-moving fire damaged three buildings in New Jersey’s largest city, leaving a fire captain injured and displacing more than 20 residents.

_ TRIBAL RECOGNITION _ New Jersey has restored official state recognition for two Native American tribes.

_ UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI CHANCELOR _ Rutgers University interim Provost Wanda Blanchett is one of four finalists to lead the University of South Florida.
