WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ A gay man was assaulted by two men who yelled anti-gay epithets and wielded a metal pipe and a baseball bat, the third suspected hate crime attack in the city in less than a month.
The latest victim, an unidentified 55-year-old man, was walking alone about 3:15 a.m. Sunday when he was assaulted by the men, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Patterson said.
A passing taxi driver stopped and yelled at the attackers, who fled, Patterson said. The taxi driver gave the victim a ride home. Hours later, the man sought treatment for cuts and bruises. He was hospitalized in stable condition, authorities said Monday.
The attack was near the site of the Sept. 2 beating of two people with a baseball bat. Treve Broudy, 33, was critically injured in the assault, in which anti-gay epithets were also used.
Investigators suspect the assaults may be connected because of similarities in suspect descriptions and weapons, said Capt. Linda Castro.
On Sept. 15, two men were attacked outside a nightclub by a mob of about 15 people who allegedly chanted ``Kill the Jews.″ Daoud Mohammed Mavid, 19, and Mohammed Hassan Aref, 22, were arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon.
A $91,000 reward was established during Monday’s City Council meeting for the capture of the assailants who attacked Broudy and the others. The council also approved personal safety classes through the city’s Recreation Department and urged neighborhood Watch programs to focus on preventing hate crimes.
``We need the community to become proactive and to look out for each other,″ said Mayor Pro Tempore Steve Martin. ``This community will not tolerate such hate whether it is anti-gay, anti-Jewish or anti-African-American.″
