At Tribeca, the night belongs to Patti Smith _ and Bruce
NEW YORK (AP) — The night belonged to Patti Smith at the Tribeca Film Festival — and to her friend Bruce Springsteen.
After a screening Monday night of a new concert documentary about Smith, the curtain at Manhattan’s Beacon Theater rose to reveal Smith and her band, in the flesh. They performed several of her hits, and then Smith introduced her surprise guest: Springsteen, who came onstage to join her in the song they co-wrote, “Because the Night.”
Springsteen stayed onstage for the finale, “People Have the Power,” and were then joined by former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe.
The new film about Smith, directed by Steven Sebring, documents the Los Angeles concerts in January 2016 in which she performed her debut album, “Horses,” on its 40th anniversary.
