4 Massachusetts teachers win presidential award

August 24, 2016

BOSTON (AP) — Four Massachusetts teachers are among the 213 recipients nationwide of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The state Department of Education says the recipients are science teacher John Heffernan and math teacher Karen Schweitzer, both at the Anne T. Dunphy School in Williamsburg; Neil Plotnick, a math teacher at Everett High School; and Keith Wright, a science teacher at The Springfield Renaissance School.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker in a statement congratulated the teachers and thanked them for their “dedication, knowledge and enthusiasm.”

President Barack Obama announced the recipients earlier this week. Winners receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at the educator’s discretion. An awards ceremony will be held Sept. 8 in Washington, DC.
