BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Senior quarterback Eric Randall set the school's career passing record and ran an error-free offense Saturday as Southern University held off Northwestern State 13-7 in a nonconference Division 1-AA game.

It was the season opener for both schools and Southern's third straight season opening victory over the Demons.

Tailback Melvin Williams scored Southern's only touchdown, a 3-yard run late in the first quarter. Williams ran for 110 yards and 23 carries and had 56 yards on a pass reception. Southern's other two scores were field goals of 41 and 24 yards by Carlos Leach.

Northwestern got a 7-yard touchdown run by Clarence Matthews late in the second quarter to draw within 10-7. Leach kicked his second field goal just before halftime and neither team scored afterwards.

Northwestern reached the Southern 15-yard line with under four minutes left, but got no further and the Jaguars ran out the final 3:17.

Randall threw for 141 yards on 17 of 28 passes, running Southern's new no-huddle offense. He surpassed the school record of 5,440 career passing yards by Nathanial Harrison, with a 13-yard pass to Williams in the third quarter.

Northwestern outgained Southern 392 to 300 but the Demons committed three turnovers, including an interception at the goal line in the second quarter.
