KANATA, Ontario (AP) _ Otis Grant of Montreal, who took eight stitches over his left eye after an accidental head butt, successfully defended his WBO middleweight title by stopping Ernesto Sena in the ninth round Tuesday night at the Corel Centre.
Referee Mark Nelson stopped Grant’s first title defense at 1:57 of the ninth round of the scheduled 12-rounder, ruling the cut from the previous round was in a dangerous location.
Grant was ahead on the cards of all three judges when the fight was stopped.
Grant improved to 31-1-1 with 17 knockouts, while Sena, of Chicago, dropped to 34-10-3 with 10 knockouts.
The fight, before a crowd of about 6,000, was the first world title defense by a Canadian boxer in Canada.
