January 13, 1997

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Kate Starbird scored 40 points and Charmin Smith’s layup with 9.4 seconds remaining gave No. 3 Stanford a 77-76 victory over Southern California on Sunday, the Cardinal’s record 31st consecutive Pac-10 win.

The Cardinal (16-1, 4-0) saw their lead cut to 75-74 by Tina Thompson’s basket with 1:06 remaining. After Stanford missed a jumper, Michelle Campbell’s layup gave the Trojans a 76-75 lead with 22 seconds to play, their first lead since early in the second half.

After Smith’s basket, Thompson missed an off-balance jumper in the lane in the final seconds for the Trojans (9-4, 3-1).

Starbird was 15-of-20 from the field and her 40 points was the third-best total in Stanford history. She scored 30 of the Cardinal’s 38 points during a stretch at the end of the first half and the start of the second. She fell four points short of her career-high, set last season against USC.

Smith, making her second start of the season, scored a career-high 15 points.

USC led for much of the first half, but toward the end of the half Starbird scored nine straight points and Smith hit a 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds left to put Stanford ahead 33-31 at halftime.

The Trojans cut Stanford’s lead to 59-58 and tied the game at 62-all, but Thompson committed her fourth foul and sat down with 8:05 to play.

The Cardinal ran off seven straight points and led 71-63 when Thompson returned with 5:05 to play.

Another USC spurt, including a 3-pointer by Kristin Clark, got the Trojans within one, but Starbird’s layup increased Stanford’s lead to 75-72 with 1:28 remaining.
