49ers Defensive Tackle Breaks Leg

December 1, 1998

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Bryant Young, considered one of the top linemen in the league, broke his right leg in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game against the New York Giants.

Young was on the ground for several minutes before being wheeled off the field on a gurney. San Francisco coach Steve Mariucci said Young was taken to a hospital and might have immediate surgery.

``It was an awful injury,″ Mariucci said. ``Bryant’s a tough guy. If anybody can make it back from an injury like that, he can _ but not this year.″

Mariucci was one of those standing around Young as trainers gently lifted him onto the gurney. Players stood sadly along the sideline.

Giants quarterback Kent Graham said he heard Young’s leg break.

``I heard a crunch, I heard he was obviously in pain. It’s one of those situations you hate to see a fellow football player go down like that. I told him I would be praying for him,″ Graham said. ``He was hurting big time. I could see his leg. It was like another joint in his leg.″

Young apparently was hurt when teammate Ken Norton Jr. rolled into his leg as the two were converging on Graham to try to make the tackle.

``That’s a devastating blow to our team,″ 49ers quarterback Steve Young said. ``Bryant Young is the man.″
