Krieger chosen to represent first district on county board
Nick Krieger is joining the Mason County Board of Commissioners after a 5-1 vote during a special meeting of the board Monday night at the Mason County Courthouse.
The board chose between two applicants, either John Kreinbrink or Krieger, to fill the vacancy left by the death of First District Commissioner Wally Taranko. Taranko died April 8, and he was re-elected to his seat in November 2018. The term runs through Dec. 31, 2020.
The lone dissenting vote was cast by Dr. Lew Squires.
“Thank you very much,” Krieger said during the second public comment period after the vote. “I’ll try to do what’s best for my constituents and try to represent them well.”
Krieger is an attorney, and he is serving on the City of Ludington Planning Commission, the Mason County Promise Authority Board and the Mason County District Library Board. Krieger will need to resign from his positions on the promise board and library board to eliminate potential conflicts of interest, and he plans to resign from the planning commission because of time constraints, he said.
Kreinbrink, who formerly was on the county board in the 1980s, commended Krieger.
“I know Nick will do a great job,” he said. “He’s done a fantastic job on the planning commission.”
Each candidate had 10 minutes to tell the six board members about themselves, their experiences and more. Each of the sitting six commissioners were given the opportunity to ask questions of both Krieger and Kreinbrink. The questions ranged from green energy such as wind and solar power, how business-friendly Mason County is, views on courthouse security and pressing issues facing the county.
Both recognized the work of Taranko during their discussion with the sitting board members, too.
While the vote was 5-1, Board Chair Janet Anderson the decision did not come easily.
“We had two extremely qualified candidates,” she said following the vote. “Mason County is extremely lucky that you both came forward. It was a tough decision.”
Following the meeting, Krieger was sworn in by Mason County Clerk Cheryl Kelly.
The next regular meeting for the board, and Krieger’s first representing the first district that includes the first, second and third wards of Ludington, is at 9 a.m., Tuesday, May 14.
