Michael Jackson Interview Gives ABC Ratings Win

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ ABC’s ``PrimeTime Live″ interview with Michael Jackson put the network on top of last week’s ratings, with about 60 million viewers watching at least part of the show.

Diane Sawyer’s live interview last Wednesday with the pop singer and his wife, Lisa Marie Presley, was the week’s No. 1 program and gave ABC its highest rating ever for one of its news magazines.

For June 12-18, ABC had six of the top 10 programs to earn a leading 9.2 average rating and 18 share, according to figures Tuesday from Nielsen Media Research.

NBC was second with an 8.1 rating and 16 share, followed by CBS’ 7.4 rating, 14 share. Fox Broadcasting Co., which programs 15 of the 22 prime-time hours, had a 4.7 rating and 9 share.

Fledgling networks UPN and WB earned a 3.8 rating, 6 share, and 1.8 rating, 3 share, respectively.

Each ratings point equals 954,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation’s estimated 95.4 million TV homes. Share is the percentage of sets in use tuned in during a specific time period.

NBC’s highest-rated program was the fourth game of the NBA Finals, which competed with the Jackson interview and came in second. The best CBS could manage was 12th-ranked ``60 Minutes.″

Fox’s highest-rated program was ``The X-Files″ at No. 53. Game one of the Stanley Cup Championship Finals ranked 88th for the week but was the highest-rated NHL broadcast since the 1990 All-Star Game, Fox said.

Among the nightly newscasts, ABC’s ``World News Tonight″ posted its 145th win in 146 weeks with an 8.3 rating, 19 share. ``NBC Nightly News″ followed with a 6.7 rating and 15 share, while ``CBS Evening News″ earned a 6.4 rating and matching 15 share.
