More Americans Visiting Britain

August 5, 1987

LONDON (AP) _ Britain had 1.35 million overseas visitors in May, up 20 percent from May 1986, with tourists from North America leading the pack, the Department of Employment said Wednesday.

The department said visitors from North America numbered 360,000 in May, 61 percent from May 1986.

Tourism Minister John Lee said, ″1987 may turn out to be the best year yet for the British tourism industry.″

Lee said it was ″particularly good″ to see more Americans coming to Britain. Their numbers sagged last year because of anxiety over nuclear fallout after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident and possible terrorism following the bombing of Libya.

The department said overseas residents made 5.3 million visits to Britain from January to May, 13 percent more than in the similar period of 1986.

They spent $3 billion dollars, up 13 percent from a year ago, the department said.
