Bus Collision Hurts Three in New York
NORTH HUDSON, N.Y. (AP) _ A Canadian charter bus crashed into a tractor trailer at a U.S. Border Patrol security checkpoint Sunday afternoon, sending most of the 58 passengers to hospitals. Three people were in critical condition.
The bus on its way from Quebec to Florida crashed around 2:30 p.m. on Interstate 87 in North Hudson, about 90 miles north of Albany, authorities said.
Of at least 54 people taken to hospitals, three were airlifted to hospitals in upstate New York and Vermont and were in critical condition, said Ray Thatcher, director of Emergency Services for Essex County. At 15 people were in stable condition, while others were treated and released.
A witness said the bus was heading south on the highway when it rammed into the back of the tractor trailer at the checkpoint. Thatcher said two other vehicles may have been involved in the crash.
Three helicopters and 18 ambulances were called to the scene. A section of the highway was closed.
