March 27, 2019

NEEDLES — Explore the challenges of operating a giant system providing water to millions in the Desert Southwest during a presentation on city participation in a lower Colorado River tour. The tour was conducted Feb. 27 through March 1. The presentation comes during the Needles City Council meeting of Tuesday, March 26.

Public session begins at 6 p.m. in council chambers, 1111 Bailey Ave. at J Street. City councilors will also consider items as the Needles Public Utility Authority and Successor Agency to the Redevelopment Agency. The agenda includes:

• A public hearing on general plan and zoning changes for nearly 14 acres along Needles Highway both north and south of the Murl Shaver substation, applied for by Deer Park Development. The land is to be used for expanding cannabis industry facilities and developing an industrial park for businesses that provide support to the cannabis industry.

• Adopting an ordinance relating to an exclusive franchise agreement with Allied Waste Transportation Inc. for collection and handling of solid waste.

• Discussion of deploying trash containers at Needles Area Transit bus stops; and for permitting ‘Safe and Sane’ fireworks within the city.
