New Orleans Saints’ Taysom Hill scores touchdown, shows versatility in 2018 NFL preseason debut

Second-year NFL quarterback Taysom Hill did it all for New Orleans in the Saints’ 24-20 preseason-opening win Thursday at the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hill led a 12-play, 81-yard drive in the fourth quarter that ended with the quarterback rushing for a 3-yard score, cutting his team’s deficit to 20-17. Hill was responsible for 78 of the yards on the fourth-quarter TD drive.

Hill, a Highland High and BYU alumnus, led three second-half drives, completing 8 of 9 passes for a team-high 72 yards. He also rushed seven times for a team-high 52 yards and one touchdown.

Hill displayed his versatility Thursday by lining up on the Saints’ kickoff and punt coverage teams. He was also the holder on the Saints’ three successful extra-point attempts and kicker Will Lutz’s successful 45-yard, first-quarter field goal.

Teammate and Blackfoot High and Idaho State graduate Josh Hill caught one pass for 7 yards.

Hill and the Saints (1-0) continue preseason play Aug. 17 at home against the Arizona Cardinals.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Koetter and Tampa Bay opened the 2018 NFL preseason Thursday with a 26-24 win at the Miami Dolphins.

Chandler Catanzaro’s 26-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining lifted the Bucs to the last-minute win. Bucs QB Ryan Griffin tallied a game-high 179 yards passing and one touchdown.

Smith, a ten-year NFL veteran, started for the Bucs at right guard.

The Buccaneers (1-0) continue preseason play Aug. 18 at the Tennessee Titans.

Marvin Lewis (1978-80)

Cincinnati Bengals

Lewis and the Bengals rallied late to win 30-27 on Thursday against the Chicago Bears at home in week one of the 2018 NFL preseason.

Cincinnati’s Auden Tate caught the go-ahead, 33-yard touchdown with 2 minutes, 4 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Chicago jumped ahead 27-23 on a 3-yard run by Demarcus Ayers with 9:26 left in the fourth frame after Cincinnati led 23-14 at halftime.

Cincinnati’s Andy Dalton threw for 103 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Bengals (1-0) continue preseason play Aug. 18 at the Dallas Cowboys.
