LUDLOW, Mass. (AP) — A Ludlow man faces multiple counts of animal cruelty after officials allege they found ponies, donkeys, alpacas and other animals that had been starved and neglected on his property.

Dean Manuel was ordered held without bail at his arraignment Monday pending a competency hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

The Republican (http://bit.ly/1fW2BRv ) reports that the 43-year-old Manuel pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of animal cruelty. He also faces charges for allegedly assaulting a police officer who came to investigate.

Officials found four donkeys, eight ponies, six pigs, four goats, four alpacas, four ducks, two sheep, and a goose, emu and rabbit at the property.

Animal welfare officials say most were underweight, and one alpaca was so weak it could not stand.

The animals are now under professional care.
