Nonprofit chief joins county board
KANKAKEE — The head of a local nonprofit group is the newest member of the Kankakee County Board.
On Tuesday, the county board unanimously approved the appointment of Jackie Haas, R-Bourbonnais, as its new District 27 board member. She is filling the seat left vacant by Patrick McConnell, R-Bourbonnais.
The seat is next up for election in 2020. Under state law, the board was required to fill the seat with a member of the same party as McConnell.
Haas has been the president and chief executive of the Helen Wheeler Center for Community Mental Health the last 18 years. The group primarily serves those on Medicaid or those with no insurance.
Her father, Jim LaMotte, served on the county board years ago.
“My family has a long history of public service and volunteerism,” Haas said. “I’m excited to get involved and play a larger role.”
In August, McConnell, 75, resigned from the board saying his schedule was crowded with a full-time and two part-time jobs.
He had been on the board for nearly a decade.
