Helen Fraser: Sewer users can help keep system costs low
Wipes are touted as disposable and even flushable. Disinfecting wipes are causing headaches for operators of the city’s sewer system. The cloth-like material doesn’t break down in the sanitary sewer system like toilet paper and can block the sewer lines, clog equipment and increase the city’s costs. Consumers are being told by the packaging that these things are flushable. The wipes may make it through the toilet and the pipes leading away from the house, but they tend to clog up once in the sewer system. No wipes in the pipes or toilet. Toilet paper disintegrates in about eight seconds. Wipes take 30 minutes.
