Jimmy Carter on Book-Signing Tour
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ At a local book signing, former President Jimmy Carter discussed growing up during the Great Depression, surrounded by ``indescribable″ poverty.
``That poverty that everybody shared also brought the people together, closer than they’ve ever been since,″ Carter said Friday.
Several hundred people _ many of them children _ came to the signing in Jefferson County for Carter’s new book, ``An Hour Before Daylight,″ which chronicles Carter’s childhood in rural Georgia.
Carter said he started writing the book as ``a memorandum″ for his children and grandchildren.
``But as time went on _ I wrote three other books in between _ I got to see that there were some stories that maybe ought to be shared with a wider audience,″ Carter told reporters during the signing.
