Reds Sign Nieves to One-Year Deal

December 24, 1997

CINCINNATI (AP) _ The Cincinnati Reds signed outfielder Melvin Nieves to a one-year contract Wednesday, avoiding salary arbitration.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Reds acquired the switch-hitting Nieves from Detroit on Nov. 11 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Donne Wall and minor league catcher Paul Bako.

Nieves, 25, hit .228 with 20 home runs and had a career-high 64 RBI in 116 games for the Tigers last season. He has recorded two, consecutive 20-homer seasons, including a career-high 24 in 431 at-bats in 1996. In his six-year major league career, Nieves has 61 home runs and 170 RBI in 375 games for the Braves, Padres and Tigers.

Infielder-outfielder Willie Greene is the only Reds player left eligible for arbitration.
