LA to host climate summit with Chinese, US leaders

November 22, 2014

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles will host a climate change summit next year to begin efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions in the United States and China.

Mayor Eric Garcetti announced plans for the meeting Friday while wrapping up the China leg of a 12-day trade mission to Asia.

He told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1BWLD4U) he has discussed the idea with the White House and a number of mayors of American and Chinese cities, and received an enthusiastic response. He said holding the summit in LA is “a no brainer” given the city’s track record in tackling its smog problem.

Timing and other details of the proposed gathering have yet to be discussed.

Last week, President Obama announced a landmark deal with China to rein in pollution to combat global warming.
