Rockford-area man guilty of fatally stabbing wife in 2015
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) — A judge has found a 38-year-old man guilty of fatally stabbing his wife inside their Rockford-area apartment after he got upset with her over some text messages.
Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato said Jose RodriguezAranda was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder. He’s scheduled to be sentenced before Judge Randy Wilt on Dec. 17.
Authorities say Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputies found Martina Chagoya-Espinoza dead on the kitchen floor after the couple’s 9-year-old son called 911 on Nov. 21, 2015. She had been stabbed 23 times.
RodriguezAranda told detectives in a recorded interview that he stabbed her the previous day then used the knife on himself. A detective testified RodriguezAranda said, “I can’t believe I did this.” The couple’s two children were home at the time of the stabbing.
