Family files lawsuit in man’s fatal shooting by police
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The family of a black man who was shot and killed by a North Carolina police officer nearly two years ago is suing the city and the officer who shot him.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday by attorneys for the family of Keith Lamont Scott names the City of Charlotte and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Brentley Vinson. It calls Vinson’s actions “grossly negligent” and “careless and reckless,” and says the city failed to take corrective action to prevent the use of “unreasonable and excessive force involving the use of excessive or deadly force” by police.
The city said it would respond to the lawsuit through the judicial process.
Scott’s shooting in September 2016 sparked days of unrest. One person died, dozens were arrested and there were millions of dollars in damage.
