The Recording Industry Association of America says the album is certified 38 times platinum, or 38 million copies. It pushes Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” down to second place, with certifications of 33 times platinum. Platinum status used to consist only of sales, but the formula was reworked in 2013 to allow for streaming and album equivalents. Sales and streams of “Thriller” were updated last year. The third best-selling album of all time is also by The Eagles: “Hotel California,” certified 26 times platinum.
