Roayls’ Santiago Hit in Head

April 22, 2001

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Kansas City Royals right-hander Jose Santiago was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Toronto’s Brad Fullmer in the 11th inning Saturday night.

After hitting Santiago, the ball had so much force that it rebounded into short center field, where second baseman Luis Alicea caught it for an out.

Trainer Nick Swartz and manager Tony Muser immediately rushed to the mound. After a few minutes, Santiago sat up and was led off the field.

Swartz said Santiago has a cut forehead. Additional details were not immediately.

Roberto Hernandez replaced Santiago, who pitched 2 1-3 scoreless innings.
