Lantern Night at Pitt welcomes female freshmen and transfer students
On Sunday evening at Heinz Chapel on the Univeristy of Pittsburgh the annual Lantern Night comenced for the 98th time. Lantern Night, the oldest tradition at Pitt is held to welcome incoming female freshmen and transfer students to the University.
One student, Halley Lien, an incoming freshman from Squirell Hill said, “I think it’s signifigant because they’re passing on the torch, not just for me, but for all the other girls too.”
Lien was seated in the pew directly behind her mother Marian, who as an alumna was able to light her daughter’s lantern herself.
Of her daughter’s departure off to college she said, “a chapter has ended, and a new chapter has begun, so I think this is very appropriate.”
