NEWMARKET, England (AP) - Dancing Brave, Europe’s race horse of the year in 1986 who was syndicated as the continent’s most expensive stallion, has been cured of a life-threatening illness, his handlers said Wednesday.
Dr. Bob Crowhurst, senior veterinarian at Dalham Hall Stud farm, said Dancing Brave had shrugged off the final effects of Marie’s Disease.
The illness, more common in dogs and cats than in horses, causes lameness and swelling of the limbs. It often is fatal.
Crowhurst said Dancing Brave, syndicated for more than $25.2 million, had been taken off painkillers and anti-inflamatory drugs March 17 and had his last treatment with antibiotics on Monday.
″All signs of Marie’s Disease have disappeared,″ the vet said.
Crowhurst said doctors would concentrate on restoring the horse’s fertility. Dancing Brave has serviced six mares this season but failed to get any of them in foal. He sired 38 colts by 40 mares in his first season at stud.
Late Wednesday, it was announced that a mare serviced by Dancing Brave this season had been found to be in foal.
