Soccer Players Defect While In Sweden
GOTEBORG, Sweden (AP) _ Three East German soccer stars defected just hours before their team played a Swedish club in an international cup match, the Swedish team manager said today.
The leaders of the East German first division club Wismut Aue and their Swedish hosts Orgryte IF believed the three; one member of the national team and two from the junior national team left the country Wednesday.
″They are probably already in West Germany,″ Orgryte’s manager Lennart Magnusson said.
He said the players asked for their passports Wednesday to go shopping. When they did not show up before the game, their hotel rooms were searched and found empty.
″It’s very sad. The East German leaders were in despair and said they would lose their jobs,″ Magnusson said.
″East German teams may never be able to come here again,″ he added.
The team left Sweden early today without the missing players.
Orgryte won the match 2-0.
