DETROIT (AP) _ Ford Motor Co. said today it is recalling 1.7 million pickups and sport utility vehicles because a faulty lug nut could cause the wheels to separate from the vehicles. Four injuries have been reported.
The voluntary recall involves F-150 pickups and most F-250 pickup trucks and the Expedition and Navigator sport utility vehicles from model years 1997 and 1998, said Ford spokeswoman Karen Shaughnessy.
The F-250s recalled do not include the F-series Super Duty model and only vehicles produced through mid-April in the 1998 model are being recalled.
The wheel separation was caused by a coating on the lug nut which did not allow for enough force on the wheel, Shaughnessy said. The company has since changed the lug nut’s coating.
``It could potentially result in a wheel coming off the vehicle,″ she said.
The company has reports of 98 instances of wheel separation and four injuries.
