Va. Commonwealth 85, Jacksonville 67
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Derek Thompkins scored a career-high 25 points Monday for Virginia Commonwealth, which outscored Sun Belt rival Jacksonville 23-5 over the last 7:11 of play for a 85-67 victory.
With the scored tied 29-29 with 3:45 remaining in the half, Virginia Commonwealth (11-11, 5-3 Sun Belt) scored nine points in 11 seconds. After Kendrick Warren was fouled, the Dolphins (5-12, 1-5) were hit with two technicals - one for taunting and one on coach Rich Haddad for questioning the call.
Warren made both free throws and Thompkins hit the four technical free throws, and then sank a 3-pointer 11 seconds later to ignite an 18-4 Ram run. The Rams went into the locker room with a 47-33 halftime lead.
Jacksonville fought back in the second half, tying the score 62-62 with 7:11 remaining. But Virginia Commonwealth ran off 10 unanswered points to nail down the victory.
The Rams got 18 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots from Warren. Eric Atkins added 12 points.
Alonzo Harris, whose previous career high was five points, led the Dolphins with 20 and Reggie Law added 16.
