Kansas City Wizards Beat Santos Laguna

July 9, 2003

HOUSTON (AP) _ Chris Brunt knocked in a rebound in front of the net to lead the Kansas City Wizards to a 1-0 win over Mexican First Division champion Santos Laguna on Tuesday night.

Brunt’s goal came in the 58th minute of the frequently combative exhibition match featuring two yellow cards for each team in the first half and plenty of aggressive tackling.

``There was a lot of commotion in there. I headed it, it went off one guy and came back to another guy. Davy (Arnoud) shot it and it was saved off the line, but came back to me and I was able to slide it right through there,″ Brunt said.

The Wizards’ bruising attack resulted in nine fouls in the first 45 minutes.

Wizards midfielder Eric Quill called it a hard-fought win.

``It was tough. We played a young lineup tonight. Some of the guys hadn’t played at all this year. It’s tough to jell for the first time in a setting like this against a good club,″ he said.

The Wizards mounted the first serious challenge in the second minute when Santos goalkeeper Christian Lucchetti stopped Wizards defender Chris Klein’s free kick from just outside the penalty area.

Rodrigo Ruiz’s deflected corner kick in the 34th minute that went just wide of the goal was Santos’ best scoring opportunity.

Santos held a 15-11 edge in shots on goal and had six corner kicks to the Wizards’ five.

The national teams from Guatemala and El Salvador played in the nightcap.
