SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) _ Italy’s Maria Zavagli knocked off top-seeded Mashona Washington of Delray Beach, Fla., 6-4, 7-5 Thursday as upsets again ruled at the USTA Women’s Challenger of Spartanburg.

No. 4 Nannie de Villiers of South Africa was eliminated by Tracy Singian of Rancho Mirage, Calif., 6-1, 3-6, 6-2; No. 5 Katie Schlukebir of Kalamazoo, Mich., fell to Australia’s Cindy Watson 6-1, 4-6, 6-2; and No. 8 Miriam D’Agostini of Brazil was ousted by Argentina’s Celeste Contin 6-4, 6-2.

No. 2 Jane Chi of Meridian, Idaho, and No. 3 Petra Rampre of Slovania lost in the first round.

The highest seed remaining in the tournament, No. 6 Kim de Weiller of the Netherlands, won her second-round match Thursday, downing Melissa Middleton of Houston 6-1, 6-4.
