Kite Disqualified at MCI Heritage

April 15, 2005

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) _ Former U.S. Open champion Tom Kite was disqualified for the first time in his 34-year PGA Tour career after signing an incorrect scorecard at the MCI Heritage on Friday.

Kite signed for a par 4 on the eighth hole instead of his bogey 5 during a round of 76 at Harbour Town Golf Links, according to PGA Tour spokesman Phil Stambaugh. Kite’s 36-hole total of 6-over 148 was one shot off the cut.

Kite had not been disqualified in his previous 705 events since he first played a PGA Tour event in 1971.

Kite was competing here for the 22nd time, but first since 1999. Kite qualified to play on the PGA Tour this year because he’s among the top 50 in career money earnings.

Kite had made the cut just once in his seven tournaments before this week.
