WASHINGTON (AP) _ Debbie Hemery scored a career-high 35 points Thursday night, leading No. 18 George Washington to an 87-68 victory over Rhode Island.

George Washington (14-3, 7-1 Atlantic 10) has won eight of its last 10 games, while Rhode Island (13-7, 6-4) has lost four of six.

Rhode Island led by six points early in the game, but GW used a 10-3 run to move ahead 33-26 on a short jumper by Martha Williams with 5:48 remaining in the first half.

Rhode Island cut the deficit to 37-36 on a layup by Rebecca Bright and trailed 39-36 at intermission. But George Washington opened the second half with an 11-0 spurt, and was never threatened again.

Tajama Abraham scored 21 points for GW, and Darlene Saar had 12 points and 17 rebounds.

Marcie Byrd led Rhode Island with 22 points, while Bright added 16.
