Janice A. ‘Jan’ Hayek
April 4, 1946-Jan. 25, 2019
Janice A. “Jan” Hayek, 72, of Vail, Iowa formerly of Longmont, Colorado, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, at home. Janice now joins God’s gardeners, landscapers and florists to continue to bring beauty into the world, following in the footsteps of her great-grandfather Anders Anderson.
Janice was born April 4, 1946, the oldest of three children born to Allen and Rosa Lee (Trambly) Anderson in Columbus, Nebraska. She received her education in Columbus, graduating in 1964. She later attended college at Colorado State University, majoring in horticulture, and she proudly became a Master Gardener.
Known to many in the area as the “flower lady,” it was her joy to share her knowledge and her prized plants. In Longmont, she was proud to have pioneered community gardens and honored to be asked to share her gardens by the Longmont Symphony Orchestra Guild.
She worked for Ball Aerospace for many years but managed to have time for multitude of other talents; many were self-taught and she strived to perfect them. A wonderful seamstress, 4-H leader, a member of the Eastern Star, Meals on Wheels volunteer, and so much more. Most of all, a wonderful mother to her daughter and most importantly, the best “Oma” to her granddaughter.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Dorinda “Dinza” Miller; granddaughter, Madison Miller; her brothers Alan (Elizabeth) Anderson, Dale (MaryKay) Anderson and Richard (Kimberly) Runge; and sister DaVida (Jeff) Jaqua, aunt Dottie June (Marlin) DeBoer; numerous nieces; nephews and cousins.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents and her very dear aunt, Wilma “Billie” Drake.
The family wishes to thank those special people who were so kind and helpful to Janice in her last years, especially Dianne Miller of Denison, Iowa.
Cremation has been handled by Huebner Funeral Home of Denison, Iowa. A celebration of life to take place in Columbus, Nebraska will be announced later.
