TOKYO (AP) _ A U.S. Air Force F-15 fighter crashed off the southern Japanese island of Okinawa on Wednesday during a routine training mission. The pilot was rescued unharmed.
The jet crashed in the Pacific Ocean about 60 miles south of Kadena Air Base on Okinawa, base spokesman Masao Doi said. A panel of officers is investigating the cause of the crash.
A helicopter plucked pilot 1st Lt. Chris Northam from the water. Doi did not immediately know Northam’s hometown. His F-15 was attached to Kadena’s 44th Fighter Squadron.
