Search suspended for 2 after barge fire off Texas coast

October 22, 2017

PORT ARANSAS, Texas (AP) — The Coast Guard has suspended its search for two crew members missing from a crude oil-bearing barge that caught fire in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas coast.

The Coast Guard said Sunday it’s completed a comprehensive search for the pair who disappeared after a forward section of the barge exploded and caught fire early Friday as a tugboat was pulling anchor early Friday about 3 miles (5 kilometers) from Port Aransas. Six crew members safely escaped.

The barge was carrying about 132,000 barrels of crude oil. Authorities say workers recovering oil from the water will continue to watch for the missing men. The Coast Guard says it will resume the search if there’s any new information.

Port Aransas is about 20 miles (32.19 kilometers) east of Corpus Christi.
