Iona 102, NC State 86
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) _ Bashkim Mustafaj scored 26 points as Iona upset North Carolina State 102-86 Saturday night.
Iona (4-3) took control with an 8-2 run that gave the Gaels a 26-19 lead with 9:24 left in the first half. Mustafaj scored four points during the spurt, including a three-point play.
Iona led 48-37 at halftime, and increased its lead with an 11-5 run to start the second half. Antoine Lewis scored seven of his 12 points during the spurt, which gave Iona its biggest lead at 59-42 with 16:03 remaining.
N.C. State (4-3), which lost its last game to Princeton, pulled to 71-63 with 7:26 left on consecutive 3-pointers by Lakister McCuller. But the Wolfpack could get no closer as Iona responded with a 7-0 run, the last five by Mustafaj.
Mustafaj sank 6 of 7 field-goal attempts, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and made 10 of 13 foul shots. Iona outscored N.C. State by a huge margin at the foul line. Iona sank 42 of 51 free throws, compared to 9 of 15 for N.C. State.
Danny Golembiewski scored 19 points for Iona, while Derrick Canada and Corey Taylor each had 15.
Kevin Thompson had 27 points and Tom Gugliotta added 21 for N.C. State.
Gugliotta, the Wolfpack’s leading scorer, was hampered by foul trouble, picking up his fourth personal with 10:16 left. He fouled out with 3:05 remaining on a charging call.
